Take a Chill Pill

Hello Everyone. I know it has been awhile since my last post and for that I am sorry. The busy time of the year is coming to an end and things are starting to become organized once again. It is amazing how life can get so crazy that you don't leave time to do the important things. We all have those times that are totally chaotic and then we don't do the things that keep us healthy and strong.

Being healthy and strong is something that is accomplished by addressing it daily this is hard when life gets crazy and the family is going different directions. However, taking care of yourself is the most important thing you can do because you only get one body. I know that you can always take a pill or have surgery and that is what the drug companies are counting on. Their billion dollar profits show that we as a people wait too long before we start taking our health seriously. They have pills on the market that range from helping you sleep to helping you lose weight. Many people don't think twice about taking a chemical to make you feel better because that is what the advertising tells us to do. We expect everyone to take medication after a certain age and if we meet someone in there 80's that does not take a medication we are surprised when in actuality that should be the norm.

As a nation we spend almost 3 trillion dollars on health care in this country and now the government wants to add 900 billion to the budget to help with health care coverage for people that can not afford it. I feel passionately that every one should have access to health care, but that is not the fix that our country needs. We need to change the medical system to be proactive instead of reactive. We need to teach and help everyone stay healthy by teaching eating, exercise and hygiene techniques that keep a person healthier and keep them from seeking the pill. We say that we Are or Strive for a drug free society, but around every corner people are taking drugs and if you don't your just weird.

I like being weird and I would like to see more weird people. Think about this for just a second. Are you healthier taking a prescription or Are you healthier not taking a prescription. I know if there was a huge portion of the population that could control their health and not have to take drugs.... Health care costs would lower. The repercussions would be that health insurance would not have to pay out as much money and then they could pass along the savings that is true health care reform.

Any questions about health information or any other pain problems please do not hesitate to call me... As always your Partner in Health Dr. Stinemetz

Hurting Everywhere?????

I would like to take a few minutes of your time and educate you on one of the fastest growing diagnosis facing the United States. This disease is known as fibromyalgia..... More than likely you or someone you know has been diagnosed with this condition. Fibromyalgia is a condition that is characterized by wide spread pain affecting the trunk, upper and lower extremities for a period of time lasting at least 3 months and may have reoccurrences. For many years, doctors would not even recognize this as a real diagnosis (they would say it is all in your head) because the only way to diagnosis it is the history. There are no lab test, x-rays, or genetic testing that can accurately diagnosis this condition.

Are you asking yourself "why is a disease that has not been widely accepted for years now one of the fastest growing diagnosis in the country?". I will tell you why; the drug companies have found a drug to treat some of the symptoms of fibromyalgia. The drug that they are using for fibromyalgia is a drug that was originally designed for another condition. The drug companies found a new niche market to which they can now poison more people. I say this because far to often in western medicine we treat a symptom and do not try to find the cause of the problem. The muscle relaxers, pain killers, anti-depressants and Lyrica do nothing to fight what is causing people to feel terrible. All these drugs do is deaden the information that your body is trying to communicate to the brain.

I have spent 8 years researching and working on treatments that are effective for fibromyalgia. I have found that there are multiple reasons for the symptoms of fibromyalgia and if let untreated will cause more significant health issues. This leads me to diagnosing it as a Multi system Dysfunction Syndrome to my knowledge I am the only one that presents fibromylagia in this manor. There are four major systems that are effected with MDS (Multi system Dysfunction Syndrome) they are:
1. Digestion
2. Sleeping
3. Infection
4. Endocrine
I have put together a 45 minute seminar that discusses all of this in detail. This is not the time or place to get detailed. The point of this entry is to first get you asking questions as to why are there more diagnosis's now is it because the drug companies are driving a market of suffering. Second is treating a symptom better that treating the cause of the symptoms. Finally do you really want other (new) health issues to occure because you are ignoring the warning signs that your body is trying to give you. The best advice I can give anyone is to get educated on a specific problem and do not take one persons opinion, research it until you are satisfied because you are the only person that deals with that problem everyday. Please do not ever hesitate to ask me questions I don't know everything, but more than likely I know someone that can help. I want every single person to live the pain free healthy life that they deserve. Your Partner In Health Dr. Nathan

Stupid Weeds

April Showers brings May flowers (and May weeds). The past two weekends I have been spending hours out doors working in my yard as I am sure many of you have. The lifting, twisting, pulling, bending, kneeling and shoveling got me thinking... This is real hard work..... To me it is a time to forget the daily issues and there is also a great sense of accomplishment when it is finally finished. I enjoy keeping my yard nice, however I see people everyday that cannot get out and do even the simplest yard work. So here are some tips to keeping your green thumb working.

Tips for a strong back and a green thumb......

1. Stretching - You may not think that yard work is an athletic event but it is. Every time you step in the yard to rake, shovel, pull or anything for that matter you should spend about 15 minutes stretching the legs, back and neck.... Check out our website for stretches under members only at http://www.ihcdr.com/ (there is a lot of education on the site so check it out)

2. Bending - Bending causes many issues to the back. Bending can be done but it needs to be done correctly. Using your legs (I know you have heard it before but it works) try kneeling or sitting on a small crate to do your yard work you are still bending but there is a little less pressure on the back.

3. Change positions - This is important no matter if your in the garden or at work. Changing positions helps to keep the muscles loose and loose muscle are less likely to cause that cramping feeling that comes from being in a position a long time. A good rule of thumb if you are in a position for more that 15 minutes move to a new position or do some other chore.

4. Adjustment - Too many times people wait until they can not move. Before any new activity get an adjustment to decrease the likely hood for injury. After all if there is more function work will be easier....

I hope this gets you thinking.... Even though yard work might be recreation it can still cause injuries to the back.... If you have any specific questions about how to do a certain activity or need stretches or anything please don't hesitate to call me at either of my locations.

swine flu

The media has a way of blowing things out of proportion and the swine flu is no exception. We have not had a confirmed death due to this virus yet, but if you listen to the media it seems like the end is near. Lets put things into perspective. If you read my blog on medical mistakes or look up the stats on chronic health crisis from diabetes and obesity there are more deaths related to those issues then there will ever be from the swine flu. Many times we would rather focus on things that we can not control than the things we have total control over like (diet, exercise, and positive thinking)..... Here is a link from an article that shows that there are more than 36,000 deaths from the regular flu every year.. Read it and make your own decision.... (maybe there are more important things to worry about) http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/04/28/regular.flu/index.html?eref=rss_topstories

My suggestion would be go forget about the news and workout and change your life. At least that is something you have control over.... Your partner in Health Dr. Nathan

Proud to be a Quack

I hear the term quack often in my profession. Over the years the chiropractic profession has not gained wide spread respect that I think it should. A little history back when chiropractic was in its infancy doctors of chiropractic were thrown in jail for practicing their profession. In the 1970's, the AMA came out against chiropractic and tried to snuff us out. The chiropractic profession sued the AMA and won (if we were quacks we would have never beat that huge organization). In recent years, I have seen medical doctors referring patients into my clinic and there is starting to become working relationships between profession. However, there are still large groups of people that feel that chiropractic is quackery or some sort of witch doctor. Those are the people that have not educated themselves on health and wellness. It is interesting that there is a lot of talk about wellness and maintenance health practices in the last 10 years. Did you know that Chiropractic have been talking about those things for over 120 years. I feel that being uneducated has led us to the health crisis that we currently face, and if things do not change quickly we all will be in a health care crisis that is unlike anything this country has ever experienced. Think I am wrong here are some facts....

These facts are from a 10 year long research study published in 2003 called "Death by Medicine". For your knowledge, this research was done by Medical doctors and researchers so it is not biased by an outside profession.

Facts From "Death By Medicine"

Estimated 10-year total of 7.8 million iatrogenic (induced inadvertently by a physician or surgeon or by medical treatment or diagnostic procedures ) deaths is more than all casualties from all the wars fought by the United States throughout its entire History.

Statistics prove prescription drugs are 16,400% more deadly than Terrorists..

Death By Medicine - states that 783,936 people in United States die every year from Conventional Medical Mistakes.

106,000 of those deaths occur from prescription drugs.

$282 million spent every year due to medical mistakes.

Health care comprises 15.5% of United States Gross National Product.

$2 trillion was spent on health care expenditures in 2005.

Projected to be 4 trillion by 2015 or 20% of Gross National Product.

In the United States total health expenditures per capita is $5711 (in 2003) which is $1,100 more than the next country. By the way we rank 6th in overall health care while spending the most by far......

And there are people that call me a quack.....

Just because something is widely accepted does not mean that it is right..... It usually means that they have more money to waste on marketing......

Now what we should do.....
the opinion of a quack chiropractor....

We (as a nation) have to take responsibility for our actions and also for education. I speak to people everyday that say they want to change and become healthier, but when I offer dietary changes they say "I don't think I can do that..". When in actuality they do not want to make a change. It is not a matter of "can or can not" it is a matter of "will or will not". We have become a nation of pill seekers and ignore health facts. The facts are that two thirds of the adult population is over weight or obese. We are in a diabetic crisis that is causing many health issues from heart disease to neuropothy. Not only are we killing ourselves we are now killing our children. One third of the childhood population is over weight or obese and that group is the fastest growing population for obesity and diabetes. My opinion is that if someday the united states has socialized medicine we will bankrupt our country by continually treating people in the same medical manor. We have to treat disease before it becomes a disease.........

The leading nations in overall health care (like Britain, New Zealand, Australia, and yes Canada) provide incentive programs for people that use gyms, get annual exams, stay in a certain weight range, and keep their labs in normal range. I know I am going to ruffle some feathers with this entry, but someone has too. We need to take action to bring about a better health ourselves. We can not go about and do harmful things to our body everyday and worry about the consequences later. The fact is that everything that is offered medically has a side effect and can ultimately negatively impact your health. I know for a fact that eating fruits and vegetables, exercising regularly, and having a positive attitude will not harm you.

I can go on.... When it comes to topics like this one I will..... So I am going to end here. If you want a better healthier life than you are going to have to do it.. No one can do it for you.... But I am here to help. Your partner in health Dr. Nathan

Don't Smoke Fish

The title of this blog represents my last to tips for this series. It does not have anything to do with the smoked Salmon in the refrigerator. It has everything to do with the cancer stick that many people insist on putting in their mouths.

9. Quit Smoking - I can not speak on experience here. I do not know how hard it is to quit.... I don't know what the craving feels like... All I do know is that smoking is one of the worst Anti-Health habits that a person can have. You can eat great and exercise, but if you smoke you can not be in good health. You might not have a disease now, but wait it is around the corner..... There is hope. There are many aids from THE PATCH, Hypnotism, acupuncture, GUM, and the good old cold turkey again I am not talking about your refrigerator. look at these findings that happen when you quit smoking. Put out by the American Heart Association

10. Omega 3 Fatty Acids - these are the vital fats that are found in fish. These are vital fats that help are cells absorb the nutrients that are needed in daily activities. The western diet does not get these fats in the concentration that is needed. It is widely accepted that everyone young and old take this essential acid.

Are Your Legs Tired

Has anyone ever said that you have been running through their mind. If they did is that exercising the mind???? Have you heard the saying a mind is a terrible thing to waste. Both of these sentences bring me to my next health tip.

7. Exercise the Mind - this is extremely important. I was raised with my parents always telling me "it is mind over matter". My mother to this day says she willed herself out of labor because of a huge snow storm when she was pregnant with my brother. So if this could be true, how can you not do something everyday to stimulate thought. Not stressful thinking but actual education and mind stimulating thought. Things like crossword puzzles, word searches and reading to name a few. Find something that you enjoy to do and after you take your vitamins, Do a Detox, Take Probiotics, have a great Attitude, Eat your fruits and vegetables, and exercise sit down enjoy and work the mind . You have nothing to lose and just maybe you will learn something in the process.

Since we are on the mind that big bundle of nerves in your skull. The next logical health tip would be chiropractic. Are you asking yourself how I went from the brain to the back.... Well let me explain a little.....

8. Chiropractic - works with the spine and the spine protects the spinal cord (yes that is really important)..... The spinal Cord is the Autobahn of information transfer from the Brain to the body and vice versa. With out proper communication the body and the brain can not perform the functions that are needed to maintain health. Have you ever had static on a telephone and not been able to hear exactly what was said that is a example of what can happen in the body. If the body does not know what to do!!!! how can it do it??? Chiropractic opens up the communication of the body by removing the interference that can be caused by a bone out of place. Sound a little hard to believe..... Ask any one of my patients that have had relief from bed wetting, ear infections, and heart burn I can go on, but the point is that chiropractic is part of the health process and anyone that tells you different is not informed. Check out my site http://www.ihcdr.com/ and explore it a little more to have some of those questions answered. Your Partner in Health Dr. Nathan

Sorry for the neglect the past two weeks. For all of you that are only 40% healthier because I have only given you 4 of the top 10 health tips, I am sorry for the delay...... These next two tips are ones that I am sure you have never heard of before. They go back centuries for there healing abilities and will undoubtedly make you healthier in just a few weeks. I hesitate slightly to share such a powerful health practice, but I am going to just lay it out for you.

5. Eat (are you Reaaaady) Fruits and Vegetables- I know what your thinking (I waited 2 weeks to learn this.... what a joke) This can be the single most important thing that you can do to become healthier. No matter if you have diabetes or heart disease or just don't want to get these diseases... fruits and vegetables can and will change your life...... Watch this

6. Exercise - we need to get 20 minutes of some sort of exercise every day. You will be surprised with just taking a walk with the family every night for 20 minutes (not only will it be good for bringing everyone together) it will make a big difference on blood flow to the body and before you know it you will be in better health.

Positive Thinking and a Vitamin?

The burning energy that stems from the deep recesses of your soul causing you to toss and turn in bed with your eyes wide open. The Innocent excitement as if Christmas eve was near. The heart racing, cold sweat, shaking hand anticipation of what is to come next.

I know how you feel........ Well your wait is over....... The next steps to better health and disease prevention are finally here. I hope you do not think that I am taking your health lightly. It is important to laugh and have fun with serious topics if you don't things just have a tendency of getting worse. Which brings me to my next couple health tips................

3. Good Attitude - a positive out look on life is extremely important in health. I hear this statement all the time and you might have even said it to me "I did not do anything it just came out of the blue, but I have been under an extreme amount of stress.. Could that have done it?" YES!!!!! Decreasing Stress may be the single most important thing to do in order to fight a disease. How do you control your stress? I hear professionals talking about stress reduction and list a hundred different things to lower stress, then you start stressing on which is right for me or am I doing this correctly..... WHICH DEFEATS THE PURPOSE..... I tell my patients that do something you love to do... If it is reading a book, exercising, taking a hot bath, hanging around friends, praying or working in your flowers (As NIKE would say Just Do It). You need 20 minutes to yourself everyday so that you can focus on stress reduction and become healthier.

4. Take a Good Multi-vitamin Multi-mineral - This is also extremely important. There are groups that are suggesting that the soil is more depleted than ever before and the fruits and vegetables no longer have as much nutritional value as they once did. I don't necessarily agree with that thought but there is probably some research that supports that point of view... I am from the camp that no matter how well you think you eat there is always room for improvement or supplementation. If your meals consist of bean sprouts with grilled chicken for breakfast, broccoli for snack, Salad for lunch, and salmon, rice and apple for dinner every night than I am not speaking to you. If you do not eat 5 different servings of veggies and fruit every day with poultry and or fish, than take a Vitamin and please do not take a one a day vitamin from Walmart because your just wasting money and the energy it take to swallow it.

More tips in the coming days..... Please contact me if you have any questions on what is right for you. Your Partner in Health Dr. Nathan

Some things in life are free

I am asked "why am I starting all this extra work for myself with the blog, website, and the million other projects that I have planned to achieve?". The short answer is that I believe my purpose in life is to make a difference in other peoples life. It pains me to see people struggle with chronic health issues, take 16 medications (and feel worse), and come thru my door frustrated because no one can find out why they do not feel well. I take all of you home with me every night (not literally of course).... I want to make a difference..... I want everyone to feel like they are in control of their own health (because you are).

Your most valuable commodity is not your house or your car or even your bank account.... It is your health. Everything in your world can be replaced except your family, your close friends and your health. Health is one of the things that money can not buy. You can have all the money in the world and still be too sick to enjoy life. That is why I am providing all of these free services. You can not put a price on information..... So I am not going to......

Over the next few days I am going to give you the top 10 things you can do to become healthier. More than 2 trillion dollars are spent on health care every year in this country alone and we are only getting sicker. So, I encourage you to take action right now and change your life by starting with this top 10 list.

1. Detox - I know I wrote about this yesterday and it is still important today. This is a great way to start changing your health. Ask me how to get started.....

2. Probiotics - These are the important guys in the intestinal tract. This will improve your immune system and can decrease cholesterol levels. This is vital for everyone....

More to come over the next few days.. Try to contain your excitement!!!!! Your partner in health Dr. Nathan

Are you DIRTY

"Why do I feel like crap?" Is a question that I am asked almost everyday. Well the short answer is (it has everything to do with the AIR you breathe, the WATER you drink, and the FOOD you eat.) See we live in a very polluted world and that means we are attacked everyday by our environment. Take a look at this...

You may be asking yourself "what can I do about the toxins besides living in a bubble". Well you might want to join the new fad of cleansing. I see a lot of marketing being done on colon cleanses and body detoxes, but how do you know if it really works or if someone is just taking your money... There are utterly hundreds of detox programs out there that range from (Ionic foot baths, Juice fasting, Lemon Juice and Honey Fast, Raw foods diet (uncooked veggies and fruit), Vegetarian Diet, Enemas and colon Cleanses, Infrared Saunas, and herbal cleanses) just to name a few. You need someone that you trust to help with this decision "what is right for you" and how you are going to feel while detoxing.

Please do not take this lightly....... I feel that you can achieve a better health with cleansing if done correctly. Until you experience life with out all the chemicals in your body, you can not understand how pain free, how much energy, and how healthy you can be and feel. Health is not just the absence of disease or symptoms. Health is an environment in the body by which everything is in balance and working flawlessly. Lets try and Achieve this balance together.... Calling Roto Rooter

The other day I had a question about cholesterol and what to do for it.. There are many prescriptions that are called statins. In my line of work, I see many people suffering from muscle cramping and general pain that take statins. One of the first questions I ask when someone comes in complaining about leg pain and spasms is (are you taking Cholesterol medication?) 9 out of 10 times they are taking a statin..

So what should you do. Well you need to be informed on options. you need to understand what cholesterol means. You have LDL, HDL, Triglycerides and all have a different number that can determine high cholesterol. What is high LDL (bad cholesterol) 160-189 mg/dl is high and 190 mg/dl and over is very high; HDL (Good cholesterol) 60 mg/dl is high 40 mg/dl is low; Triglycerides less than 150 mg/dl is normal, 200-499 high, and 500 on up is very high.

What causes high cholesterol? Is it hereditary or diet? Well cholesterol is something that is produced by the liver and diet, exercise, and heredity can cause High cholesterol. There are many options that you have when facing cholesterol issues all of which depend on how high is high.

There are those strange things called vegetables that contain sterols or stanols that block the absorption of cholesterol. Reducing red meats, baked goods, butter, and full cream milk will all help to lower cholesterol. Many people have also heard of red yeast rice. Red yeast rice has been something that had been used since the Tang Dynasty in 800 A.D... My saying is that if it has been around that long then it must work. Well maybe not.... The reason that I say that is that there is much debate as to whether red yeast rice is a drug (and should be regulated by the FDA) or is it a dietary supplement. So in the USA, the active ingredient in red yeast rice has been removed. So the effects of lowering cholesterol with red yeast rice may not be as effective as it once was. There are some of my patients that still say it helps, but that might be that they also changed their diet and started exercising (but who knows)....

What I do know is that if you change your diet and start treating your body correctly your body will treat you better.. If you have any questions about cholesterol or another health issue please do not hesitate to call and schedule a consult to discuss your individual options.... Your partner in health Dr. Nathan

stimulus or death

There are many people that want health care to be run by the federal government. This people say would lower costs and provide health care to everyone (that sounds wonderful doesn't it). What if the federal government would limit experimental cancer treatment or would say that that treatment is not covered because it is not cost effective. I know many of you would say that is not possible and they would never do that well see for yourself. There is a sentence in the Bloomberg report that says basically "Americans are expecting too much from the health care system " I don't think we expect too much..... Being healthy (disease free) is not expecting too much. Here is a Bloomberg report laying out want could be in our new stimulus package. http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601039&refer=columnist_mccaughey&sid=aLzfDxfbwhzs

If this does go through I would encourage everyone to be proactive in there health. The best cure for any disease would be to prevent it, and the only way you can do that is by treating your body the best that you can by eating right, exercising, and lowering stress. If you are in any way concered by the article you should contact your representative. For me, I do not know if this is really going to happen, but as a health care professional I have already seen too many programs that take the doctors decision making out of the equation. When you take power away from the doctors (especially decision making) you are not going to get the best care..... No matter if it is free....... Your partner in health Dr. Nathan

Mercury anyone

I get information from many people from all over the country. Some of the information I feel needs to be passed along. I received this tonight and I thought I would just post it exactly the way I got it. Sometimes I just can not say it any better..... Sent to me By Dr. David Singer

SOURCE: Vitamin Research News, May 2001, Vol. 15, No. 5, pp.1, 10-12.

MERCURY EXPOSURE TOXIC TO INFANTS
Thimerosal was approved by the FDA over 60 years ago, to be
used as a preservative. The danger associated with thimerosal is
that it contains 49.5% ethyl mercury by weight; mercury has long
been the source of many health problems.
Mercury is especially toxic to the developing fetus and infant
brain. It is poisonous at any level of exposure.
According to the FDA, “Infants who receive thimerosal-containing
vaccines at several visits may be exposed to mercury in
amounts higher than recommended by Federal guidelines for total
lifetime exposure.”
If an infant follows the Center of Disease Control and
Prevention Vaccine Schedule, they would be exposed to 187.5
mcg of ethyl mercury, depending on the manufacturer. The total
amount through 18 months could reach 237.5 mcg.
If an average infant (5 kg) received all thimerosal-containing
vaccines at his 2 month visit, the exposure just for that day would
be 62.5 mcg — an exposure 125 times above the EPA’s guidelines.
Maybe that will spark a few questions for your pediatrician. Signing off for now.. Your partner in health Dr. Nathan......

Laughter keeps the doctor away

When was the last time that you had a good laugh? Did you know that some research suggests that laughter can make you healthier? A good laugh has been shown to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, elevate mood, boost immune system, improve brain function, protect the heart, connect you to others, foster instant relaxation, and make you feel good. Whether there is a lot of research or not to back up these findings, I would practice this everyday. Smiling and laughing can not hurt anyone and you just might make someones day.

There is some controversy over this concept, but I would like you to take a week and smile and laugh and see how your week ends up. I bet that you would have the best week you had in a very long time. I would like to start your week off with a little chiropractic humor. Take a look at this..............Signing off for now your partner in health Dr. Nathan..

Over 5 million people (in my opinion there are many more) feel this way and are then diagnosed with Hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is a disease that means that the thyroid gland is under active. This condition may lead to you feeling like that first sentence (like Crap).

The reason I bring this up today is that I have many people that come into my office and say I have all the symptoms of Hypothyroidism, but they tested me and I am in a normal range. I am not going to get off track by saying too much about that other than far to often Dr. X just looks at the test and ignore the physiological aspects (the symptoms you feel). I am here to tell you that YOU are the only one living in your body and you know how you are supposed to feel. Don't just use a test to tell you that you are alright (when you know that you are not alright). One other insight that I would like to share is the health and disease model. They call it a disease process because it is a PROCESS. What I mean by this is that you do not go to bed one night and are completely healthy and wake up the next morning with the disease (it is a gradual process). This means that you can test negative for the condition and be moving toward Hypothyroidism in this scenario.

O.K.... I am getting a little carried away. To make a long story short, you have to catch the disease before it is the disease........ I know what your thinking.. "Dr. Stinemetz you already told us that the tests will come out negative. So what are we supposed to do?". I am so glad you asked that question. One early Test is "The Iodine Patch Test". See the Thyroid is the only structure that uses iodine. The thyroid uses iodine to make the hormones that it produces. Thus if you are deficient in iodine than you are not going to make the hormones that you are supposed to make. Then you feel like CRAP.

There are many other structures and hormones that can cause Hypothyroidism (and Hypothyroid type symptoms), and you should always seek a professional to help with figuring these issues out. And remember too much of a good thing can be a bad thing also. Do some research on your own and be sure to schedule a consult with me if you have any questions.

Heres to Good Health

Have you heard the saying Magnesium does a body good. Probably not because I just made that up.... But really Magnesium is a very important mineral that is necessary for your body to function correctly. It is estimated that 75% of the population is deficient in Magnesium. Magnesium has been studied and has been found to help with problems like Migraines, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Muscle Cramps, Fibromyalgia, and even can help lower Blood Pressure. A decrease in the amount of magnesium can increase the risk for Osteoporosis and can change the metabolic functions of the body that may contribute to heart attacks and stroke.

Diabetic patients are at an increase risk of being deficient in magnesium because an elevated blood glucose level will increase the loss of magnesium in the urine. This is the mechanism by which a diabetic suddenly has high blood pressure. I encourage everyone to read more about the benefits and issues that are related to magnesium.....

I know what your thinking How can I make sure to get magnesium in my diet. Well you can always take a supplement, but if you would rather eat foods rich in magnesium here is a short list (Tofu, Whole Grains, Green Leafy Vegetables, Almonds, Cashews, Pine Nuts, Black Walnuts just to name a few.). I would encourage everyone to research this yourself and again you can always feel free to ask me any questions. Your partner in Health Dr. Nathan

A Pain in the Neck

No I am not talking about my children. I am going to take a moment and discuss a email I received from a reader. A reader of my blog sent me this message I am going to keep it anonymous for reasons of protecting the privacy of the individual. They wrote:

My neck keeps me up and wakes me up and my shoulders stay tender.Massage therapy has been a temporary relief. Exercising helps only because I'm so tired afterwards I pass out. I'm running out of options. Thanks

Well I am going to do my best with this. I have to first say this is by no means a diagnosis for you. It is really hard to tell you exactly what is going on with out an examination and x-rays, but I am going to give my opinion based on educated and experience. First off I or some other Dr. would have to take a history. I start with that because it is common sense to start with that. We need to identify what started it was it (accident, sports, repetitive motion, work injury, etc.) though all of these may seem the same the Mechanism of injury is very important to the treatment of the problem.

Then we follow with an exam this can lead you to identifying the cause of your pain. Side note there is a reason that you have pain Identifying that source and fixing the source will decrease pain. what I am going to assume (I know you should never assume) is that the massage worked better at the beginning than it does now... I will list a few things that might cause this pain.
1. Subluxation (misalignment of the bones of spine)
2. Muscle (spasms)
3. Disc Herniation (bulge)
4. Disc degeneration (loss of the cushion between Bones)
5. Nerve (what some people call a pinched nerve)
6. Spinal stenosis (you don't what this can affect the spinal cord)
7. and many other significant diagnosis

Again I am not telling you you have any of these things, but these diagnosis have to be ruled out. You rule out or in the diagnosis with things like Physical Exam of area (spine), X-rays, MRI, EMG etc....

My suggestion to you would be to get it checked out. The problem with waiting is that no matter what you think it is not going to get any better, and more than likely it will get worse. You need to be proactive with this condition or you might end up with not a whole lot of options left to treat the condition. This is by no means to scare you just to motivate you.

I hope this helps answer a few questions. And to all Remember that you can call my office to set up a Consult to discuss options Free of Charge. Your partner in health. Dr. Nathan

Low Back Pain

Did you know that 85% of Americans will suffer from incapacitating low back pain at some point in their life that means that more than likely you will fall victim to pain that is unimaginable. I know what that feels like. Just to give you a little history about myself 2 months before going to chiropractic school at 21 years of age and in my invincible time of my life I suffered a major trauma to my back from a fall that took place during Martial Arts training. I landed so hard that I did not get up. My father adjusted me everyday for a month to get me going again, however, I was not able to finish up with the treatment because I was on my way to school. To make a long story short, I suffered for 3 years with bilateral leg pain that affected everything thing that I did. I was to the point that I thought I was never going to practice my profession.

Well as you know I am practicing my profession. I am writing this for the sole reason to let everyone with low back pain know I KNOW WHAT IT FEELS LIKE AND HOW IT AFFECTS EVERYTHING YOU DO!!!!! I also want everyone to know that there is hope beyond pain killers, muscle relaxers, injections, and surgery. I have made it one of my pet projects to learn and buy everything that can offer relief to this kind of debilitating problem.

What needs to be done if you are experiencing a problem like this is to seek out a professional trained to identify if the problem is skeletal, muscular, nerve, or something more like a tumor. After the identification then you need someone that will educate you in a non bias way on all your options and how you can fix the problem and just not mask it. Just remember masking the symptoms is not fixing anything, and be aware by masking the symptoms your problem could be getting worse.

I offer many options so call and set up a time for a consult to discuss your options. You might want to check out this site also https://axiomworldwide.com/ this is information on non-surgical decompression that helps with Disc Degeneration and Disc herniation of lumbar spine.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day. Your partner in health Dr. Nathan signing off.

Gray Winter Days

Does any of this sound familiar low mood, depression, anxiety, overweight, overeating, carbohydrate craving, and occasional sleeplessness. Well for millions of people this is far too familiar.

Winter season is a very tough time of the year for many people. It could be the lack of sun light, the cold, being cooped up in doors, no matter what the cause there is no denying that there are millions of people suffering in this country.

There is help; if diet changes and proper sleep is not enough then you might want to ask your doctor about 5-HTP. 5-HTP is extracted from the seed of the griffonia plant and is a precursor for making serotonin in the human body.

Serotonin is one of the ten major brain neurotransmitters. Yeah that is important. Deficiencies of serotonin have been linked to depression, anxiousness, irritability, suicide, alcoholism, violent behavior, PMS, obesity, compulsive gambling, insomnia, carbohydrate craving, SAD (seasonal affective disorder), and migraine headaches.

5-HTP may not be the cure all for Gray days of winter, however it may provide that little bit of help when you feel everything starts to close in on you.

A little Sun light or a trip to Florida would not hurt either.

Anyone with blood pressure check this out

Seven Ways to Promote Brain Health

Cognitive health all starts with proper sleep, nutrition and lowering your stress with out proper sleep nutrition and stress management all the supplements or techniques are not going to make a difference. when these things are not enough then try these seven things.

1. Increasing Antioxidant levels which reduce lipid per oxidation and therefore can help support brain health. ex. bilberry, rosemary, selenium and many others.

2. Restore Growth Factors - when acetyl carnitine and acetyl carnitine arginate are combined they dramatically stimulate nerve growth factor levels in the brain.

3. Blood sugar support - there is a link between free radicals and insulin resistance. all you have to know is that nerves can be damaged by diabetes and the brain is a big nerve. ex. cinnamon, bitter melon and many others.

4. Environmental Neurotoxins - these are things like aluminum and lead among other things using a technique to eliminate these toxins are beneficial. A metal cleanse like Metaloclear may help.

5. Lowering homocysteine - this can be done by using B vitamins.

6. Stress Reduction - So important that I am going to mention it again. this can be done if not able to regulate on your own by controling Cortisol levels. Suppliments that stimulate the adrenal gland.

7. Improve Sleep Quality - if unable to fall asleep or stay asleep both can affect sleep but are two different problems both can be helped if you can not regulate on your own. ex. 5-HTP, Melatonin and many others.

Everything listed here are things that can be regulated on your own, however if having trouble or just don't know how to regulate contact me and we can work through the problem together.
